On October 29, 1969, engineers at UCLA attempted to log into a computer at the Stanford Research Institute; the connection crashed after transmitting only the first two letters of “LOGIN,” but the attempt is generally regarded as the first message sent over what became the internet. ARPANET grew slowly through the early 1970s, connecting a small number of research institutions. In 1971, engineer Ray Tomlinson built a system allowing users on different host computers to send each other messages, and is widely credited with choosing the ”@” symbol to separate a person’s name from the machine they used, the basic format still used in email addresses today. Also in the early 1970s, work began on a protocol for splitting data into small “packets” that could travel independently across a network and be reassembled at their destination. TCP/IP gave every connected network a shared, standardized way to exchange data, and it is this standardization, rather than any single network, that historians typically point to as the true starting point of “the internet” as an interconnected system rather than one government project. Through the 1980s, TCP/IP-based networks multiplied across universities and research bodies worldwide, but the internet remained a largely technical and academic tool, without an easy way for ordinary users to browse or publish information. Domain names and the now-familiar addressing system were also formalized during this decade, giving the growing network of networks a human-readable structure well before most people outside research and government had any reason to use it.
The World Wide Web and the Internet’s Global Expansion
That changed in 1991, when physicist Tim Berners-Lee, working at CERN in Switzerland, released the World Wide Web to the public. The Web combined hypertext documents, a simple browser, and web servers into a system that let anyone connected to the internet navigate between linked pages, a far more accessible layer built on top of the existing TCP/IP internet. Public and commercial adoption accelerated through the 1990s as home internet access spread (first through slow, screeching dial-up modems and later through faster broadband connections), and search became essential to navigating a rapidly growing Web; Google, founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, became the dominant tool for finding information online and, through its advertising model, one of the internet’s most influential companies. A further shift arrived in 2007, when Apple’s iPhone helped popularize the smartphone; within roughly a decade, mobile devices overtook desktop computers as the primary way most people accessed the internet worldwide.
